Sometimes, Money Just Can't Buy Style

Everyone has a #style, whether it’s whimsical or basic. We all have unique tastes when it comes to how we dress, what we like, etc. However, then comes one of the questions that often surface in the luxury world: Is wearing designer brands really enough to make one have a style? Throughout the past, we’ve seen influencers, celebrities, and people in general buy ridiculously #expensive luxury pieces that are also ridiculously #ugly. Everyone views fashion differently, and I'm certainly no expert, but the following are pretty agreeably horrible with the #ridiculous price tag stacked on top. Here are some items where the saying that “you can’t buy style” really does ring true.

Anya Hindmarch Mini Ketchup Sequins Tote Bag - $1395

If you’ve been wanting to carry around your favorite brand of ketchup and wear it proudly, this tote would definitely come in handy. However, there are far less expensive options without the bedazzled pieces and that are not over $1000.

Balenciaga Crocs - $850

These crocs are not so far out there, but for the price, this swings into the territory of ridiculousness. While a normal pair of crocs costs around $30, you can choose to pay twenty times that amount for the added platform and the Balenciaga tag.

Prada Invites Nylon Bag - $2350

In theory, 7 bags for the price of $2350 isn’t horrible, especially for a luxury brand like Prada. But when you take a closer look and realize that this interesting piece has the aesthetic of a child’s playpen, you may want to think twice before dropping more than two grand onto this physical embodiment of confusion.

Maison Margiela Tabi Split Toe Shoes - $980

This pair of shoes are just extremely confusing. Why would anyone wear a shoe and decide that they’d want their feet to look like a camel’s by inserting a thick piece of leather uncomfortably in between their first two toes will forever be a mystery to me.

Prada Vitello Daino Eye Inside Bag Bianco Arancio - $2100

If you want your bag to stare at strangers, this is certainly the one to get. It also makes me feel as if it’s staring into my soul and I’m not sure how I would feel with it sitting in the corner of my room watching me sleep. Thankfully, with a price tag of $2100, I don’t think I’ll ever find out.

These were just some luxury items that I found so ridiculous they were awe-inspiring, whether for the price tag or the overall design. However, I appreciate how they go outside the realm of normalcy, being very unique. I find that is it is very important for even well-established luxury houses to continue innovating and incorporating new ideas into their pieces for every season, although some may fall into the category of pure confusion. Money truly cannot buy style, but hey, that’s just my taste. Style is whatever you make it to be, if you love an item, go for it: it’s nice to be different nowadays.

Hi Sophie, I found your blog so hilarious and entertaining. I agree that these items definitely refer to, "you can't buy style." Even though they are luxury designer items, I can't imagine wearing or buying any of them. Your descriptions of the items put a different spin on things. Instead of telling the readers why someone might buy these items, you explained how they are not the style to go for. Overall, I'm so glad that I got to read your blog!

I think it was a great idea to acknowledge that everyone has their own style and that that they like how they do things. That is important to keep in mind because the saying "one person's trash is another man's treasure" can apply to fashion. There are some things here that would be considered weird by most, but I loved your snarky comments in between each telling what you think for the ridiculousness. Another great thing about this post is that even though the things you talk about are ugly, you do recognize that they are unique.

I thought it was really interesting to see the many different products that are sold for exorbitant prices despite not bringing much value to one's life. I also appreciated your take on the matter with "style can't buy taste," and overall found the piece entertaining and eye-opening at the same time.

I thought your blog was amazing and I thought it was great that you could see your personality in your writing. I have always thought that high-end fashion was a little insane based on images I have seen at catwalks, but I always assumed it was the overall look was crazy and never paid too much attention to the individual pieces. Based on the examples you have provided I am able to see how bizarre the world of fashion truly is. You could get better things at the thrift store. I thought you did a great job showing people how the price of things to do not make them fashionable.

The ideas that you present throughout the article shows how the modern fashion companies can just put out anything and put whatever price tag they want on it. You do a good job of overviewing multiple different items and you go in depth about the unique and utterly gross styles that these companies are using. I feel like the diversity throughout your piece is amazing.
